2012? Theories? thoughts?

The following is a question being asked on Yahoo Answers. Both the questions and answers given do not reflect the view of our website.

Question:
Do you believe that something (as in a disaster or something of that nature) will happen in 2012? Or do you think that it could just speak of an ending of one (how do I say it “phase” maybe?) of the earth and a beginning of a new chapter? I would like to believe that the earth will live on as I am particularly young and would like to experience life a bit more. but perhaps you could tell me a little of the theory’s and which one you put most stock into.

  1. Everything you’ve heard about 2012 being a drastic change in Earth in any way is a complete hoax.

  2. I think people are just making a big deal about it to have something to talk about…
I don’t know what will happen but I’m just gonna go on with my life regardless

  3. Those definitely aren’t theories. Those are just dumbass ideas.

  4. I second the thought that they aren’t theories, just dumbass ideas.

Really? A calendar that explodes? A planet that hides behind the Sun like a squirrel?

Who came up with these things and are they being properly restrained and medicated?

Nothing out of the ordinary is going to happen. None of the claims by the doomsday prophets are based on science, just wild speculation. The people writing the books aren’t scientists and are just trying to make money. Here are some of the promoters of the 2012 hoax.
Zecharia Sitchen – an author, not a scientist, a proponent of the ancient astronaut theory, the Annunaki, and Nibiru.
Mark Hazlewood – author of a book predicting Planet X to come in 2003
The Hysteria Channel – promoting doomsday scenarios to increase viewers and sell advertising.
Nancy Lieder – a “contactee” who thinks she is getting information from entities from Zeta Reticuli.

The Mayans didn’t predict doomsday. It is just the end of the current cycle of their Long Count calendar.

Nostradamus didn’t predict it. He never mentioned 2012 and all the Nostradamus “quotes” being thrown around aren’t what he actually wrote. They are what some people have decided that he meant. Even Nostradamus scholars don’t agree on how the various centuries and quatrains should be interpreted.

The Bible never mentions 2012 or references it in any way. It talks about the end times, but there is no mention of when.

Nibiru/Planet X doesn’t exist. Planet X is a name that was used when looking for an unknown planet. Zecharia Sitchin is not a scientist, but is an author of books promoting the ancient astronaut theory for human origins. He attributes the creation of the ancient Sumerian culture to the Annunaki (or Nephilim) from a hypothetical planet named Nibiru in the solar system. The Doomsayers predicted that it was to hit Earth in 2003. Undaunted when it didn’t show up, they just moved it out to 2012 to coincide with the end of the current cycle of the Mayan calendar.

The Sun isn’t going to be aligned with the center of the galaxy.

There is no actual planetary alignment. Sometimes the planets appear to be aligned in our view of the sky. This is a long way from actual alignment in space.

Geomagnetic reversal – These reversals of the magnetic field have occurred in the past, as shown by magnetic striping, but we can’t predict when they will occur again. However, the time between reversals is not constant, varying from less than 100,000 years, to tens of millions of years.

Although fast by geological standards, reversals are by no means quick on the human time scale. They take roughly 5,000 years, with estimates ranging from 1,000 years to 8,000 years.

Solar flares – These do increase and decrease in an eleven year cycle. They haven’t caused any serious problems in the past. The direct effects of solar flares are mainly related to communications and radio transmissions. We had a major series of solar flares in 2005.

Previous end of the world predictions
    2800 BC – 1700 AD – 67 predicted dates
You can go to the abhota site to read any or all of the predictions. However, I count 394 predicted doomsdays, 381 of which are in the past. We’re still here.

    2800 BC – 1700 AD – 67 predicted dates
    1701 – 1970 – 92 predicted dates (years often duplicated)
    1971 – 1997 – 68 predicted dates (years often duplicated)
    1998 – 1999 – 51 predicted dates (all for 1998-2000)
    2000 – Now – 85 predicted dates
    Future – to 2011 – 18 predicted dates
    2012 – 2040 – 13 predicted dates

    Don’t worry hon.

  6. dont fool yourself, its all just people getting excited, there is no reasonable evidence of any cosmic or earthly disaster, even from a prophecidal standpoint.

it all goes back to the Mayan calander, and i would have stopped long before year 2012 if i was the designer!!

  7. No, not at all. Please don’t worry about what you might have heard on TV, the radio or in the movies. Their reasons are all bunk.

The sad part about all the 2012 uproar is that so many of its components are recycled. Just about any of the astronomical “catastrophes” have been the subjects of warnings before this. The likelihood of any of those occurring is 0.

The only thing new that is brought to the table is the Mayan long-count calendar. The turnover of the longest component of that calendar is about as important as New Year’s Eve. All it says is the current cycle ends and a new cycle begins, period, end of story.

Are you worried about “all the earthquakes we’ve been having”? You shouldn’t be. According to the United States Geological Survey, in an average year there are 134 large (Magnitude 6.0-6.9) 15 major (Magnitude 7.0-7.9) and 1 Magnitude 8.0+ earthquakes. There have been two big quakes near the US this year, so there is more publicity then we might usually get.

So what will happen? The world will go on. A lot of worried people will feel stupid. A lot of stories will run about the big anti-climax, for about a week or so. And the main hoaxers, will quietly slip out of sight, to reappear in a few years for the “next end-of-the-world” scenario, likely 2029-2033: the 2000th anniversary of the Crucifixion (year depending which chronology you accept).
