Critically examining the "End of the World"
another 2012 doomsday question?
The following is a question being asked on Yahoo Answers. Both the questions and answers given do not reflect the view of our website.
Question:
on utube there is a video called 2012 prediction/mayan and i chang…that was shown on the history channel showing that this event (when the earths polar caps shift) can happen with in a day…i guess it only happens every 25,000 years! they also show how alaska used to be at the equater…..opinions on any of this stuff would be great..thanks

no. its impossible. alaska did used to be at the equator, along with every other landmass. hundreds of millions of years ago all of the continents were one super continent called pangea, which was located at the equator.
it is completely impossible for the poles to switch.

A lot of what you’ve seen is just untrue. Some of the rest is partially true, or might be true. And a lot is just conjecture bearing no relationship to truth.
The job each of us has in this life is separating as much truth from fiction as we are capable of doing.
I’d suggest you do some research. And don’t assume anything you’ll get here approaches truth.
If, for instance, you want to know about the many times polar reversals have happened in earth history, web search the term and you’ll find answers you can trust.
Edit: Please, also, don’t believe that because some replies contain rudeness, condescension, and ego-driven incivility that all scientists are cads. Many come from good homes where they were taught manners and appropriate behavior. Many are good people who don’t see themselves as better than anyone else.

It’s nonsense, suitable for fertilizing lawns. This is both my opinion (which you asked for), as well as scientific fact.
Just how many times do people need to ask this idiotic question? Didn’t Yahoo point out that this question had already been asked?

nope just like 1999. people thought that everything like computers would die and things would fall. 2012 is like from I am lengend the movie

2012 is the predicted peak of solar cycle 24. There were astronomers in the past with knowledge of this cycle. My feelings are this exactly. So get your solar filters out and enjoy. End of the world, pssh. Geta grip.

Sudden polar shifts have happened, and will again. Its longer between shifts than 25k years though, I believe. For people that don’t believe its happened before and will again, they need to do a little more research. The only reason scientists don’t dicuss it is because there is nothing we can do about it. It doesn’t occur because the polar caps are melting, it occurs because there is a magnetic shift. This shift of the magnetic poles, which is a slow but steady process, causes the oceans currents to warm and move, which is what causes the poles to melt….they have done this in the past and in the process of doing it again, its a naturally occuring process. The poles become unbalanced with a build up of ice on one side, while its melting on the other side, then the skin of the earth shifts to balance itself again on its axis. This is what has happened in the past. You should do a quick search for the wooly mammoth found in the artic a few years ago….it was unburied in the snow because of a glacier melting I beleive. It was perfectly preserved because it was flash frozen, scientists were starteled first at how quickly this animal was frozen and secondly at what was preserved in its stomach…..when the animal died suddenly it was eating buttercups, beautiful little yellow wild flowers that had been growing in a European meadow…
The movie, “The Day After Tomorrow” is based on more science and fact than people would like to admit. They just don’t want to scare you because there is nothing we can do about it. We can’t change the magnetic shifts that are occuring.
I doubt this will happen in 2012, highly doubt it, but someday it will happen and there is nothing anyone on earth can do about it. Its just a naturally occuring process. Global warming and magnetic shifts are natural. Its not about greenhouse gases or being more green, its just life……volcanoes, earthquakes, magnetic shifts, polar melt downs, we don’t have nearly the power little people would like to think we do. We are at the mercy of this earth whether we want to admit it or not!

There is no evidence, nor plausible scientific mechanism, for any sudden movement of the Earth’s poles. Alaska’s journey took many millions of years. There is some evidence of what geologists are calling “rapid pole wander”, but “rapid” in this case means possibly as fast as ten degrees per million years.
These people are trying to graft scientific credibility onto a combination of Mayan mythology and New Age silliness. The History Channel is turning into the Superstitious Nonsense Channel.

2012 is the year my really good friend graduates, NOTHING better happen!!! HaHa, well… it is like a myth from the Mayan tribe. It has been passed down from generations, and no its not true. Its quite impossible. And, I wouldn’t believe it unless you were one of those “aliens are real” and “the Greek Gods control everything” type of people.

Poles can shift(I think, I don’t know if it’s scientifically true, or just a story). The 25000 years part(26,000 actually) is that the sun will be aligned with the earth WHILE going through the center of our galaxy. http://www.survive2012.com
