Critically examining the "End of the World"
Can anyone explain the Mayan calendar and why it ends on December of 2012?

And is it so mysterious just because it is so correct in an astronomical sense?

I watched some special on TV a few years back about this…
from what I remember if you track backwards the Mayan calendar “ended” several times in the history of the world. Each time that it ended there was a huge change in the world. So we can expect a big change in 2012…

I think the Maya believed that that was when the world would end. December 21st (or 23rd) 2012. That’ll ruin everyone’s Christmas, huh?

It’s correct in that it matched the location of various stars and planets. What is debatable is the reason that it ends in that no reason is given. The fist assumption is that world will end but that is rather far fetched without a reason. The other possible conclusions are that they simply ran out of stone, “funding” or interest in continuing it. Another likely reason is that their civilization collapsed before they could go any further.
To the best of my knowledge, they left no predictions relative to the end of the world and if they had, I would have a hard time believing them ans they couldn’t predict the end of their civilization.

I was told it had to do with the sun’s cycle as solar activity is currently on the increase maybe it will start to decrease after 2012.

If you’re serious about looking into it, it’s going to take more than just reading an artcicle. Here’s an amazing lecture about it all. It’s a long one, but well worth it. The first 10 or 15 minutes of it goes a little slow, but stick with it…it’s important. The end of the lecture is mind-blowing and fabulous.
I’d also like to add, that 2012 is prophesized in almost every tradition, not just the Mayans. Though they have different “stories” around it, most of them say the same thing once you boil it all down. I’ve been researching all this for some time. My conclusion is that it’s going to be a beautiful event.
(although, undoubtedly, the earth will have some changes)

The Mayan calender is based on cycles of life death and rebirth each of which ended with some tragic upheaval and it considered “accurate” in detail by those who believe in such things. Bear in mind the Mayan culture was utterly destroyed almost 700 years ago and like most people couldn’t see past the end of their own noses metaphorically speaking.

(i am tired of ansewering questions about the Myan Calendar. it is so much the same as Y2K and every other end world story. ) however you asked so you need info so i will give you what i have. and believe.
1, the Myan people did not believe that it was an end of world prediction. Christian translators believed that.
2, the Myan people did believe that everything ran in cycles even time itself.
3, the Myan Calendar is simply the end of the current cycle. and the beginning of a new one. (not the end of the world)
4, they did not make a calendar beyond that. simply for the same reason that we do not make 2009 calendars Now. it (they) simply is not needed yet.
study Myan and related. religions and cultures to understand these things.

It is believed the calendars were created by the ancient ancestors of the present day Mayans, who were all but wiped out in a catastrophe that took place thousands of years ago. The calendars were built in part to warn future generations of such reoccurring catastrophes as well as other cyclical patterns in nature. It is thought to have been created in a time when the human mind could transcend time and space: A time of enlightenment.
The Long Count and Short Count Calendar
I am aware of two Mayan Calendars. The first one tracks the 25,625 year cycle that it takes for our solar system to complete an elliptic orbit around the black hole, at the center of our Milky Way galaxy. This part is called the “Long Count” also referred to as a Galactic Day. Within this great cycle are five equally spaced intervals of 5,125 years each, which are timed in accordance with bursts of energy that erupt from the center of the Black Hole: This part is called the “Short Count”.
The “Galactic Day” is known to have a “Night time” as well as a “Day time”. When our Solar System is in orbit furthest away from the Center of the Galaxy (the Black Hole) it is “Night Time”: When it is closest to the center it is “Day time”. On Dec. 21, 2012; We are due to start a new Galactic Day. With the beginning of this new day, we will start to receive a higher frequency of energy from the Black Hole. This energy lifts us into a higher dimension, a higher plain of existence; into a time of conscious enlightenment.
On Dec. 21, 2012; we are also due to complete one of the shorter 5,125 year cycles (the Short Count). Here a burst of high energy will erupt from the center of our Galaxy (The Black Hole) and cause our sun to form large Solar Flares, which will further help heat up Earth. This energy may also cause both our Sun and Earth to shift their poles.
Twenty years prior to this event, starting in December of 1992, we enter a twenty year period the Mayans call “No Time”: During this period, smaller energy bursts will emanate from the Black Hole. This energy will slightly elevate our consciousness and help guide us through the time to come. It is my experience that one must learn to “quite ones mind” for one to realize the effects of the time; kind of like what meditation does for people: Learn to relax and listen to within: Not to ones thoughts, but to strange sensations that come in the form of feelings. One of the messages is “Love thy Neighbor unconditionally; for they are children of god as you are: Made by him and of himself”.
The Mayan Personal Calendar
The Other Calendar I am aware of is somewhat more complicated. It is comprised of two interlocking cycles. The first cycle is 260 days and called the “Tzol Kin”. The second cycle is 360 days and called the “Tun”. Unlike the “Long Count”, this calendar was not used to chart any orbiting objects. Instead it uses a 360 day solar cycle and combines it with a 260 day energy cycle. It was used by the Mayans as their personal calendar. It told them of energies associated with each day and how that energy will affect them individually as well as their collective consciousness.
This calendar could also be used to track our consciousness level from the beginning of time (From the Big Bang) to the present and into the future: With the maximum level of consciousness being obtained on Dec. 21, 2012 and stretching into eternity. One can only speculate on what this means for the human condition, but it would seem we will have either reached our destination or not: Either way, “life as we know it will end”, so the prophecy says.

The calendar in question is called the Long Count Calendar. It is not mysterious at all, nor is it extra correct. It is very simple. It’s like an odometer. It simply counts days. Every day the count goes up by one. It never ends.
12-21-2012 is the first day of Baktun 13. A baktun is a unit of time measurement around 400 years long. The count goes up to 19 baktuns and even then it doesn’t end…there is a bigger number called a pictun which equals 20 baktuns.
