Critically examining the "End of the World"
Can you describe in simple language, what is supposed to happen in 2012 according to the Mayan calendar?
The following is a question being asked on Yahoo Answers. Both the questions and answers given do not reflect the view of our website.
Question:
I have read very confusing detailed answers to this question in other places. Can anyone break it down for someone who has not studied the Mayan calendar?

According to the Mayan Long Count Calendar, the 12th baktun ends and the 13th one begins. It’s just like our calendar going from 1999 to 2000. They just used different units of measure–a Baktun is 396 years long.
The calendar doesn’t end, btw, that’s a widely-held misconception.
Also on that day there’s a grand astronomical alignment between the Sun and the Milky Way at dawn. This alignment only happens every 26,000 years and it’s theorized that the beginning of the 13th Baktun was synchronized with this occurrence on purpose when the Long Count was created.

Please do not vote for me. I am just ‘seconding a motion’ by GeveraBert. It’s how i explain too, but my sources are different:
