Will anyone take the time…..?
The following is a question being asked on Yahoo Answers. Both the questions and answers given do not reflect the view of our website.
Question:
…to read this short essay? It will only take you a few minutes and it would really help me. No one I know is really grammatically correct so I need some good input. Good, bad, whatever. Just let me know what you think.
It could only be up to 500 words otherwise I would have made it much more detailed. Thanks in advance!

The End of the World?
The debate surrounding the year of 2012 is full of both scientific and religious opinions. In theory, varied dates in December 2012 (usually the 21st day of the month) represent the end of the 5,125-year-long cycle regarded in the Mayan Long Count calendar, which supposedly will also mean the end of our world. Argumentative scientific theories include a geomagnetic reversal, a collision with another planet, and a galactic realignment. Still, the question remains: Is this the end of the world or the end of an era? Or, perhaps, is it just a trivial hoax?
The first of these theories is the one related to a massive geomagnetic reversal. This will be triggered by an explosive solar flare equal to approximately 100 billion atomic bombs going off. This belief is generally supported by the fact that the magnetic field of the Earth is weakening, which will cause a reversal in the North and South magnetic poles. Scientists believe that this reversal is long overdue since the previous one occurred 780,000 years ago. However, skeptics agree that the reversals take up to 5,000 years to finish, and do not start on any given date. Therefore, these reversals could already have started and will slowly, and unnoticeably, continue to switch.
A collision with a different planet is the second theory predicted for 2012. This theory has been floating around since 1995 and it was initially said that the event would occur in 2003. The planet, known iconically as Nibiru or Planet X, will supposedly collide with the Earth. However, astronomers agree that any object that was that close to Earth would actually be visible to the naked eye when viewing the night sky. This theory is also based on evidence stating that persons have actually spoken with alien beings and, for that reason, is highly ridiculed.
The third of the scientific theories states that a galactic realignment will occur and cause a deadly alignment with a black hole. Supposedly, a combined gravitational effect will be created between the Sun and this black hole (located at the centre of our galaxy), resulting in a fatal outcome for the Earth. Skeptics have many arguments against this theory. For one, it is noted that this phenomenon has already occurred in 1998. Secondly, this black hole – known as “Sagittarius A*” – would have to be six million times closer to Earth to cause any sort of gravitational disruption.
With all the evidence supporting a falsity in the 2012 phenomenon, why is it that people still live in fear of it? Recent disasters, such as the tragic earthquake in Haiti, have drastically added to this growing fear. We do not have control of what will happen to our planet, but most can find reassurance in the scientific backup related to December 2012. Whether a skeptic or a believer, we will all be relieved when the “End of the World” turns out to be just another “Y2K”.
