Critically examining the "End of the World"
Christians: Do you believe that the world will end in 2012?
The following is a question being asked on Yahoo Answers. Both the questions and answers given do not reflect the view of our website.
Question:
I personally don’t believe nothing is going to happen in 2012. Reason is, people back in I believe 1994 altered the way people see the Mayan Calendar. Their calendar ends at December 21, 2012, but we’ll never know if they even finished or not. Just because the calendar ends on December 21, doesn’t mean the world will end. I believe the Polar Shift will happen, but there is a zero chance of making an impact on us.
The Polar Shift has nothing to do with the end of the world.

First of all, great to see you back, brother.
Secondly, I can agree with you, nothing will happen in 2012. All hoaxes that were made by people in 1994 I believe too. The facts state that the Mayan Calendar ended in December 21, 2012. Other people now makes a rumor that they found another piece to the Mayan Calendar and says that they predicted that an asteroid will come hit in 2036. All hoaxes. Now, here are some long facts, so bare with me brother.
**They did not predict anything happening in 2012. It simply that their famous calendar ended in 2012, so people have leaped to the conclusion they were predicting the end of the world. They definitely DID NOT predict anything about the poles shifting.
The chance that the world will end as a result of a pole shift is such that it is practically zero. It can not be predicted nor is it really expected although there is evidence that the magnetic fields have shifted in the geologic past. That does NOT mean that the earth has flipped around so that northpole becomes southpole — it just means that the magnetic field have shifted.
As to it being a religious thing…religions have been built on many isolated and erroneous ideas.
On to a more practical aspect of your question — your extreme concern about the end of the world in during your lifetime…
Life is fragile and uncertain at the best of times. You could easily just drop dead as you are reading this sentence. So you need to figure out what the consequences are if you do die.
If you don’t believe in an afterlife, then you have no worries because in your belief system you will simply cease to exist. However, you could be wrong and there actually is an afterlife.
So if you believe in an afterlife, you have to determine what you actually believe about that. Is it just another “phase” or “spiritual plane” or “other world” or “alternate universe”? Does your belief system indicate that everyone just moves to another place after they die?
If you believe this, then what do you believe about that other place? Does EVERYONE end up there? No difference from here and now except in a different place? Then why worry — it’s no different that what you are now experiencing — same people, same thoughts, etc.?
However, if you believe in a heaven and hell type of afterlife, you have to decide where you fit in. Does everyone go to heaven? (then why is there a hell?) How good do you have to be to go to heaven? Who decides?
Do you believe in a God of punishment? or a God of forgiveness? or a God of Grace? How do you reconcile all of these aspects?
In other words, you need to decide for yourself where you think you will end up if the world ends (or you die — same thing). And then you need to decide for yourself if that is really what you believe. or do you continue living your life like you have all week?**

Nothing. All it is, is their calendar has ended. If you are starting to think the world is going to end in 2012, here are some reasons why the world will NOT end in 2012.
The theory of the world ending in 2012 isn’t true, it’s just a silly hoax. The world isn’t going to end on December 21, 2012, just the Mayan Calendar ends. One of several Mayan calendars is the Long Count calendar, which is reset to day 0 every 1,872,000 days or 7057.5 years. The next reset date, by some calculations, is December 21, 2012. This is not a prediction of the end of the world. The Mayan Calendar has to end sometime. Besides, nobody can’t predict when the end of the world is. You shouldn’t always believe what you hear from other people. The scientific evidence about 2012 doesn’t go together. Those who spread rumors about 2012 should be punished. You know what is sad, people may commit suicide over this thinking its the end of the world. Or maybe some people would get unwise with their money and spend it all like crazy and be in thousands of dollars in debt, just because they thought the world would end. Then they have to pay it off later and deal with the stress of those bills. That’s why those who spread rumors about 2012 should be punished. You know what else is false about this 2012 garbage?
● Planet X (Nibiru) isn’t going to hit the Earth it doesn’t exist.
● Poles are switching everyday, this isn’t going to happen all in just 1 day. This process takes thousands of years. Throughout geological history there has been may pole switches and life has still survived.
● Also people are saying these poles will switch in one day due to a black hole. That’s NOT true. The nearest black hole to our galaxy is 1600 light years away.
● Sun will be lined up with a sunspot, but it doesn’t mean it will wipe out all life on Earth. One time ago, Earth was lined up with a sunspot and people were on it and everybody didn’t just die.
● There is not going to be catasphoic earthquakes.
● In the Bible there is nothing that says the world will end in 2012. They say they got their proof from Revelation 13 and you see the number 666 and that number is just a number in God’s book that represents human imperfection. So, 3 of those 6′s mean humans are extremely imperfect.
● Just because certain cultures predict it like the Chinese, Japanese and all of them doesn’t mean their predictions are correct. As I said, nobody can predict such a thing.
● No comment will hit Earth.
● We are going to have a rare night sky, nothing more. No asteriods, no comments, etc.
Each time the end the world is predicted. They are always wrong. Here are all the predictions of when the world would end and each time they where wrong. Every year there is a prediction like this. I’m sure that if 2012 doesn’t happen, they will think of something else. Through out history the end has been predicted but has never happened so, whats the point of worrying? What if tommarow you chocked on a sandwich?

You are a little late.
The world ended Tuesday before last. If you missed it, don’t worry. It’s scheduled to end again in five months, then again in 2012 of course.

Do not believe everything you see, read or hear. No one can predict when the world or time will end. My world and time ends when I die.

As I said last night, the 2012 case is just like the digital TV transition, they’ll just change the date.

No one knows the date of Christ’s return. There’s no reason to think 2012 is more likely than any other date. The whole Mayan calendar nonsense is about selling books and DVDs to gullible people who listen to George Noory or watch Oprah.

The majority of Christians don’t believe in this. Are you really asking this question?
No because the Rapture of the Church has to happen, the Treaty between Israel and Antichrist which will last for 7 years. The Tribulation will last for 7 years and 2012 is 3 1/2 years down the road which would put us at the middle of it.
The Rapture and the Treaty hasn’t happened yet, so no it’s not 2012.

I’m a Christian and in the Bible it says no one will know of the coming (end of the world) other than God. So I don’t believe that it will be on that day. It could be any day. Even today. Maybe even that day, December, 21st 2012. But nobody knows that. It’s not for sure. Only God knows when the world will really end because he knows everything.

No.

It will be before that or after that but not on that.
Your Government may be planning on killing off a lot of folks by that date because they believe it want b enough natural resources to serve everyones needs.
So to insure it’s enough for them, some of you will have to go, about 1/3 of the worlds population ( Like 1/3 of the angels that sinned )
That would be great suffering and sorrow and it must get worst before it gets better.

2012 is the beginning and the end of a cosmic universal cycle. A polar shift would destroy most life on Earth. Its not going to happen in our lifetimes or anytime soon. The end of the world isn’t imminent either.
There is potential for human-made mass destruction that would kill many and would alter weather patterns and cause more tsunamis and earthquakes etc, but if we avoid nuclear war, we should be ok.
Profound but important.
Earth has been around for about 4.6 billion years. Humans have been here for 1000′s of years. Who do you think will be the first to go, humans or earth? Has the human experiment been done here before?

It could seem a bit ‘flippant’ but aren’t the Olympics due in 2012.
It’s a (wabi Sabi) thing. My appologies to the Japanese if I have spelt it wrong. It’s to do with effort rather than result.
Anyway, the end of the world is taken really out of context. We have Jesus to come first. God doesn’t break His Promise, and not even Jesus dare try and change what His Father has said. (We do have an invite to have Him as our Father too as the Bible tells us. (the spell check has got stuck – very close to the beginning)

I have read all these answers here and I find something very funny and odd. People on here seem to think that nobody can predict anything. Our solar system operates like clock work. Every thing goes round and round like gears in a clock. It is now possible to accurately predict solar and lunar eclipses. There are other things about our system that is predictable. The Mayans made their calender by years of observation of the movement of the planets, the moon and our earth. They seem to understand more about these movements than today’s really smart scientist. You can keep saying that nothing is going to happen on that day they stopped the calender. But why did they make it to have so many days on it and then stop it on that day. You may not know the date from the top of your head the next time Haley’s Comet makes a visit but you can look it up and walla you have an accurate prediction. The people that made that calender had more time than we have to make observations. I think they knew something about an event that we do not have a clue about. I went to college with a lot a smart people and watched them cheat their way thru school. I have even caught my doctor lying to me about my health. If you think That I am going to trust any body in this day and time to tell me the truth about anything then we have a lot of people that have lost their minds

People have speculated for years on the earths cataclysmic ending. In 2000 we had the Y2K, now as we get closer to 2012, people fear that a large planet/star will collide with the earth. Do I believe it will be the ending of earth? No. Do I think it’s possible that it could happen? Sure.
I believe it’s possible that a star could collide with the earth, but it won’t be the end of the earth.
“And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.” — Revelation 8:10-11
I don’t claim to be a prophet, I can’t see into the future, I can’t read anyone’s mind, or see into their hearts. When I very first heard of Planet X/Niburu/Wormwood, I thought back to Revelation 8:10-11, as above. There are some that think Revelation 8:10-11 has already been fulfilled in some way, but I see it as its literal word.
One thing we can be certain of though… Jesus will return.
“Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.” — Acts 1:11
While Jesus did give us an idea of when he would return in Mark 13, and then again in Matthew 24, no one knows the exact time, day, or hour in which the King of kings, and Lord of lords will return.
As Jesus put it,
“But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.” — Matthew 24:36
And then again in Acts 1:7, And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
“But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.” — Matthew 24:37-39
