Critically examining the "End of the World"
Do you think the world will end on December 21st, 2012?
The following is a question being asked on Yahoo Answers. Both the questions and answers given do not reflect the view of our website.
Question:
The Mayan calendar predicts it and loads of other prophets agree. They do not specifically mention the end of the world, but agree that a cataclysm will occur. Howeaver, Jesus said that man would be unable to predict the date of the appocalypse before time, so surely, if you believe in Jesus, this is proof that it is not the end in 2012? Please say what you think. Any scientific or religious views would be appreciated.

Go away with your mysticism..this forum is not for such people!!!

If the Mayans were so smart how come they’re all dead?
No.
The Mayan calendar says no such thing. 2012 marks the end of an age in their calendar. And even if there is a “great change” why can’t this change ever be a good thing?
the world was supposed to end on new years day in 2000(Y2K). But I am still here! So I think I am gonna live beyond 2012

The Mayan calendar does NOT predict the end of the World; it merely (and correctly) predicts the time when the Solar System passes the central point of the planar disk of the Milky Way as the spiral arm of which we are part oscillates up and down in a 60,000-year cycle.
The Maya devised their calendar so that it ended to correspond with that event with the intention that the calendar would then start again from the beginning.
Why so many religionists have become so completely hysterical over a calendar devised by a pagan civilisation that could not even predict it’s own extinction is beyond all logical reason.

This has been asked so many times I almost feel like an expert just by reading this forum.

that’s my birthday and i will not allow the world to end on my birthday.
It will and then begin again at 12am 12, 22, 2012.

I’m actually starting to hope that it does, just so this question can finally die with it
about 1 year ago
just to add to the confusion…
If you believe in Christ, then you would assume that the world would not end on that date, thus making it entirely possible for it to end on that date because people would expect it to not.

You need to just type in this question and see how many times it gets asked on here daily. Come up with something new!

I’m not a scientist or religious. What I do know is some stuff I saw about this on a History Channel special, and some research I have done on my own. From what I’ve seen it looks like 2012 is a huge year for outer space stuff, eclipses and that kind of stuff. I’ve heard the theory that it is actually possible for the poles of the earth to switch, which yeah would bring what pretty much everyone thinks of as end of the world apocalypse thing. As for me, I really don’t know, but I will tell you I think I’m gonna just kick it in my apartment all day on the 21st and 23rd (the alternate possible end of the world day).

The Mayan Calender does not even hint that the world will end in 2012, like you mentioned, it only says that it will suffer a dramatic change. And to be honest, no amount of evidence or persuasion will be able to sell all that i have and prepare for the end of times. Sorry, I’m not that credulous. But hey, the whole situation is ambiguous, so think what you will; but if you are going to believe the Mayan calender expect another apocalypse every 56 years
about 1 year ago
umm..i highly doubt that…there have been so many other predictions of when the world would end and everyone was so sure…but obviously they didnt come true…btw..i do believe in jesus..but thats not why I think this…it just wouldent make any sense
about 1 year ago
The Bible specifically says that the world must be united under one ruler for a time and that there be total uninterrupted peace on earth prior to the apocalypse. Since humanity can’t get by it’s varied differences we’re not likely to accept one ruler over all and as a result continue bickering over dwindling resources till none of us are left. So far as the Great Event of the Mayan Calendar…yes the Earth may/might be shifted on its access slightly as a result of the total galactic alignment (all the planets, sun, etc in alignment with the galactic center)–the grandest of conjunctions happens approx every 13k years. If the Earth were to shift more than a little than much of humanity will cease to exist…not the end of the world…it may/might in fact be good to wipe 1/2-2/3 of the populace so that the remaining resources would be plentiful once again. PEACE!

I fear that the end is near, but hopefully not that near. Their calender ends in that year, but our calender go on years beyond that. Also like you just stated, “Jesus said that man would be unable to predict the date of the apocalypse before time”, although if the scientists who believe in evolution keep playing with the Lord, he is going to show everylast one of us that he is real.

In The Bible The Tribulation and Great Tribulation last for seven years. First the Rapture must take place. Then some undetermined amount of time must pass for The Tribulation to start.
2012 is only four years away. Not enough time. Do not believe “End Of The World ” stuff from secular sources. Only at the point of the Rapture can we truly know.
Like all other doomsday forecasters these will be proven false.
Yes! YES!
Why? When the question first started coming up, I’d say no, and explain the absurb confluence of mayan history, astronomical events and christian theology people are cobbling together to lend this more credence than any of the cajillion previous doomsday prophecies. I now say YES, because of you. Your question has pushed me over the edge. This questions and others asking about other dates have done it. I’m going to start building a doomsday device. I calculate that I’ll need just about four years to complete the process. So, yes, I, personally, will destroy the earth on that day.
ARRRGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!

No because the Bible says:
Matthew 24:20-22 (King James Version)
King James Version (KJV):
20But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:
21For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
22And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened.
We should never pray for the great tribulation to happen on the Sabbath Day or near winter time. December 21 is Sunday.
The Bible also says:
Revelation 9:5 (King James Version)
King James Version (KJV):
5And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.
Revelation 9:10 (King James Version)
King James Version (KJV):
10And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months.
Because the Mayan calendar contradicts 5 months, it’s wrong. The 5 months start from May the month of the Rapture and end 5 months later on October the month of the end of the world for unsaved individuals. Also because there is no year 0, we must conclude that 2011 is the right date instead of 2012.

People seem to have always believed that the world was about to end. I sometimes wonder if it’s a sort of arrogance, as if people don’t want to believe the world will go on after their lifetime and that they will be there at that end of everything. During the English Civil War some people believed the world would end if the King was executed – for them the executionof a King by his subjects was such a monumental thing. But the world didn’t end, except for Charles I! As has been already said there have been no end of gloomy predictions in recent years, especially in th 90s, due to the ending of the century. Much the same happened in the 1890s. Who knows what will happen in 2012, but my two predictions are that there will be an Olympic Games in London and that many people will hve to find a new date to predict the end of the world! So don’t let the mention of 2012 ruin your day!

No one knows when the end will come. Even Jesus God’s son doesn’t know. Only God Himself. Will it happen in 2012 maybe or maybe not. All i know the bible says The rapture will occur first and then the tribulation (1000 years) So I’m still here that means we have some time before the end. All i can say to be ready and the way you can be ready is to put your trust and faith in Jesus who died for you He took the punishment for your sins so you can be reconciled with God and have a home in heaven eternally. There is no other way to be ready for the rapture. Read your bible or get one to read, Go to a bible believing church. pray, serve, Get to know God and Jesus. He is very wonderful don’t listen to those who know nothing about God and His word.- bible .

We cannot say Jesus will return in 2012. The Bible makes it plain that only God knows when this will happen. Moreover, we never know when we will die, we are not promised even the next second. Therefore, we need to be prepared each day as if this is the day He will appear.
My Dear, no one knows, however, when that day or hour will come–neither the angels in heaven, nor Jesus Christ(the Son);only God the Father in heaven knows. Be on watch, Be alert!– Bible(Mark 13:24-37)

I doubt that it will, but if it does, there’s no point in obsessing about it….there’s nothing we could do. Live in the moment and be kind to your fellow man/woman~

I wouldn’t call it “proof” that it wont happen, I would just call it supporting evidence. Neither are based on scientific date. What is based on scientific data is global warming and possibly the consequences of the LHC.
The Lord said there would be many false religions and prophets.
I would think that these are some of them.
“The Fallacy of Positive Instances” state that people only remember “predictions” that actually happened, and disregard those which haven’t. When they do happen, it’s strictly coincidence.
Science in psychology could tell you that a brain can not read the future. Religion would tell you that not even the devil would have the power to do that. Only God.
So, I think it wont happen.
God might just appear first and destroy us.
Probably not.
Ever since the Y2K and 6/6/6 (June 6, 2006) End of the World scenarios did not pan out, the scare mongers have been touting the 2012 End of the World scenario. When 2012 does not happen either, I am sure they will think of something else.
“But of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come.” (Mark 13:32-33)
Jesus told us in no uncertain terms that we were not to know when the end of the world would come but that we were always to be ready.
The early Christian Church thought that Jesus was going to return at any moment. Only after a couple of centuries did the Church realize that it may be 2,000 or 4,000 or 8,000 years before Jesus returns.
The Catholic Church wisely follows Jesus’ advice and teaches that each of us should live as if we will meet our maker in the next ten minutes and that we need to work to make the world a better place for our 100 X great-grandchildren.
Do not worry about the end of the world. Trust God to make sure everything happens to plan. Just be ready to meet God at any time.

no its stupid therer was a big prediction that the 06/06/06 wud end the world but did that happen… NO. it will end eventually in 13 billion years when the sun dies and expands until the covers the whole earth and we are all melted. but there is a slight chance that that will not happen if the woorld just dies out and turns into coal. it depends wat type of star it is i guess.
Leave God alone and let God andhis son do their work they cant do anything with you wanting the world to end al I have to say is that forget about this and the world will end when the Devil come to earth in the flesh and not in he spirit rilm and that is when it will get really dark and reddish and then my God and his son jesus will shop up to protect all of ye that shall believe in him.
For the bible says
Ye shall not have any others before me.
