Critically examining the "End of the World"
Does anyone believe the world will in end in 2012?
The following is a question being asked on Yahoo Answers. Both the questions and answers given do not reflect the view of our website.
Question:
People are starting to believe that every 40,000 years the 10th planet gets nearby the Earth, and the aliens will come and end the world. And that on December 21, 2012, the calender will end. A lot of people are preparing for this date. Then, scientists are believing that a huge volcanic cloud will block the sun for 40 years.
This has got to be the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard.

Of course, I don’t believe it. It’s hard to believe that the world will end at a specific time. It could end in 5 minutes if it wanted to.

This is the first I have heard of it. But I can’t predict the future and I am trying to live my life in the now, cause there really isn’t any other time then right NOW

its the most ridiculious thing ive heard also. i do NOT believe the world will end in 2012. probably the mayans thought the world would end by then and they stopped the calendar. or maybe they were just too lazy to continue with all those dates.

Mayans came up with the date so they must believe it, if you can locate any of them in Central America.

The first two, scenarios I don’t think so. But the third, possible but unlikely to happen in our life time.
One theory as to how the Dinosaurs died is that the an asteroid hit the earth. The Asteroid It’s self wouldn’t have been responsible for the death of the dinosaurs, but rather the aftermath was. The Impact of the Asteroid may have covered the atmosphere of the planet with ash and volcanic gasses, blocking out most of the planets sunlight.
No sunlight, means very little heat and no Photosynthesis, for plant growth. So the Dinosaurs starved and froze to death.
Bear in mind that scientists believe the earth has been hit by asteroid like these on several occasions over the past 6 or s Billion years. They believe this could happen again.

I’m starting to feel a little ominous about 2012 too!

I don’t think thats stupid. So far we’ve seen a lot of chaos in this world. And with so many economic & environmental problems, who knows what will happen in the future. We haven’t had many great years since 2005. I do believe if we keep our human activities up, we’re sure to end this world very soon.

I haven’t met one person who believes any of this.
These predictions are scare tactics, conspiracy theories, and chances to make money from books and movies.
Ever since the Y2K and 6/6/6 (June 6, 2006) End of the World scenarios did not pan out, the scare mongers, conspiracy theorists, book sellers, and television executives have been touting the 2012 End of the World scenario. When 2012 does not happen either, I am sure they will think of something else.
“But of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come.” (Mark 13:32-33)
Jesus told us in no uncertain terms that we were not to know when the end of the world would come but that we were always to be ready.
The early Christian Church thought that Jesus was going to return at any moment. Only after a couple of centuries did the Church realize that it may be 2,000 or 4,000 or 8,000 years before Jesus returns.
The Catholic Church wisely follows Jesus’ advice and teaches that each of us should live as if we will meet our maker in the next ten minutes and that we need to work to make the world a better place for our 100 X great-grandchildren.
Do not worry about the end of the world. Trust God to make sure everything happens to plan. Just be ready to meet God at any time.

Hoooray! It couldn’t happen to a better earth!

Interesting. There is some concern that the caldera under Yellowstone could become active and produce a super volcano. The debris blocking the sun would stop photosynthesis, and then where would we get oxygen and food from? It would be a whole new world.
