Galactic Alignment…are we in for doomsday?
The following is a question being asked on Yahoo Answers. Both the questions and answers given do not reflect the view of our website.
Question:
I’ve been reading about the Mayan calendar ending in 2012, and that doesn’t really have me concerned. What concerns me is the galactic alignment and pole shifting that is said to take place on the winter solstice in 2012. Is there any real science backing this up? What about a black hole I’ve heard about? I just wondered if people are using this as a way to make money off books. Tell me what you think…if you know what you’re talking about. Don’t go by what you’ve read on the Internet. That’s where I’m getting all this info that has me confused.

Please don’t be concerned. Despite what some might say, there is absolutely NO evidence that anything untoward is going to happen. Regarding alignments, think of it this way. Draw a dot on a piece of paper. Now draw a circle round that dot. On the circle draw another dot. This represents the Earth’s solar system’s orbit around the galactic center. Notice that when you compare two points, they are ALWAYS aligned. This is all, as you suggest, merely a scam to make money from poorly written and produced books and videos. I’m a bit surprised that Al Gore and Michael Moore haven’t got into the act.

OK here’s the real deal. The magnetic poles have a little to do with the axis of rotation of the Earth but not much. At present, and probably for the previous many thousands of years the North magnetic pole has been near the North pole of rotation but not at it. It is probably hundreds of kilometres away. On a Earth-wide scale, that is near.
The magnetic poles move all the time, they wander about more or less at random but generally quite slowly. This has been known for decades, possibly two centuries or so.
It is known from tracing the magnetic fields of rocks that the magnetic poles reverse from time to time. This is not a sudden or even regular event. During the changeover, which might last several hundred or a few thousand years, there might be more than one “north” magnetic poles and more than one “south” magnetic poles. Eventually they sort themselves out and settle down one way or the other for many thousand more years. There is no effect on the pole of rotation.
This event is almost certainly not influenced by the Sun and even less likely by anything the Galaxy or any black hole happens to be doing. It is almost certainly controlled only by convection currents within the Earth’s core, which are slightly modified by the Earth’s spin. The modification by the spin is probably the reason that the magnetic poles are near the poles of rotation most of the time.
As for “galactic alignments”, this is just as much nonsense as anything about Planet X or the Mayan calendar. We do not actually know where the so-called central plane of the galaxy is, or even if if there really is one. Even if there is one, it might be bent or wobbly. If we do not know where it is or if it is bent, wobbly or anything, how can anyone predict an “alignment” with it?
The best guess is that if we are anywhere near it, (which is a whole other question) we might have been “aligned” with it at any time within the past three million years, including last week or maybe the day after tomorrow.
At any time since the formation of the Earth, the Earth, the Sun and the centre of the galaxy have made a rough line once every year. From time to time the line might be straighter than others but even in a rough line-up, any effect that was going to happen with a straight line would be measurable to some extent. Like 80 or 90% of the full amount.
The direction the Earth’s axis points in space is the cause of the seasons. The fact that this direction changes very slowly (again, a well understood natural effect) means that the relative positions of the stars also changes very slowly. There is no other effect.
Most of the stuff about this is more astrology than anything else and all astrology is drivel.

So what if there is a magnetic pole shift in 2012.800 million people killed.38 countries flooded beyond repair.Another 132 species of life wiped out within a 42 hour period.Every major city destroyed by earthquakes.2 billion people on the street without a home to go too.89% of us navy wiped out.The human race could survive from such a disaster.Man will go on but i cannot say that about the us goverment.

There’s something I don’t understand. You dismiss the Mayan “calendar”, then get worried about something else that you’ve read about in the same place. Then you give the best advice, which is, don’t believe what you read on the net. So, go and take the next step, which is to find out from reputable sources. Have you heard anything about it on the news, for example?
Only one thing in your question is true: “. . . people are using this as a way to make money off books”. The rest of that stuff you’ve read doesn’t even make sense.

Ive always believed that Global Warming is to do with undetectable energy from the galaxy as a whole as we approach the galactic alignment around 2012.
There is so much we dont know.

The alignment of the sun, earth and black hole in the center of the milky way is an event that only occurs every 25000 years or so. Evidence shows the earth was inhabited by the same creatures then as now. I really don’t see any devastating effects. I think we are in much more danger by causing our atmosphere and environment to reach a tipping point where the planet can no longer absorb our man made pollutants. Then species will become extinct.Maybe even ours.

I believe there might be something behind 2012. There are just too many cultures of people getting the same date and year for it to be a coincidence. The Hopi Indians of North America, the Maya of Mexico. The I-Ching with the end of days.
Einstein with his polar shift theory, Edgar Cayce with the return of Atlantis. The bibles Armageddon.
Well the point I’m saying is that many cultures have mad end of days prophecies. And most coincide with December 21, 2012.
Also the stuff about black holes is total crap…The nearest one is like 6,000 light years away, and our sun is too small to even get close to becoming one.
