It is all just a story, and no one has any idea about 2012 or any of the future.

All a bunch of baloney.

haha not to scare you or anything but when it came to science and all that, the mayans were always right.

Actually, the Long Count calender doesn’t even end on that date. It is cyclical, it merely reaches a round figure then (or, possibly on December 23 of that year, a few scholars have good reason to believe that date instead, but most agree on the 21st).
For a full detailed refutation of the 2012 hysterics, check out the link in my sources section. It’s been worked on by several Top Contributors in this very Y!A Astronomy and Space forum, a necessary link, given the frequency of 2012 doomsday questions that appear here.

No, the world won’t end (nor humans) simply because the Mayan calendar ends. However we may be in for some big changes, but not just because of their calendar ending…

i know how you feel i’m a freshman in high school graduating on 2012 and by the time the world is supposedly to be ending i’ll be in college for my first year. and every thing about 2012 is bull this is why things like that should not be said cause its affecting little kids i’m so sorry that you are confused but i personal believe that only god can decided when and how the world is going to end i don’t believe that the Mayans are god so just leave your life and stay in school.

You should be at least 13 to use Y!A – community rules.
And the whole 2012 stuff is just nonsense. There is not even scientific evidence that the Mayan calendar will end in 2012, despite even serious websites saying this, there is only a single book cited as source for the claim, and it is pretty hard getting this book in a university library. it seems to be not very often requested by scientists (But I study computer science and space flight technology, not ancient meso-american cultures)

officialy no technicaly yes the sun will rise in the dark rift which will disrupt our magnetic fields and cause lots of storms like in the day after tomorow and when ever there has been an ice age the sun has risen in the dark rift so we will face another iceage which we may survuve using our modern technology but tha wont happen because everyone wants to nuke everyone else and take over also there is supposed to be a drought and famine at 49 degrees lattitude and its at within half adegree either way of that lattitude that 90 percent of the worlds weat is grown world wide. so i guess we culd die or live oits upt to us

This is a good chance to practice your critical thinking skills. There is an answer here which says “Yes, the sun will rise in the dark rift” and then goes on to talk about the terrible effects that will supposedly have.
Does that have any meaning to you? It doesn’t to me. Can you find an astronomical or scientific website which talks about “the dark rift” and anything like the sun rising in it?
Whenever you see a supposedly scientific claim, see if you can back it up with a google search that turns up anything on a scientific website.

What makes you think the Mayans are so smart? Is there a Mayan Empire dominating the world with their advanced scientific weapons? People forced to learn the Mayan language because of their economic power? Mayan preachers running around converting people to the worship of their gods?

Don’t worry about being confused at 11. José Argüelles was much older than 11 when he invented the idea that the Mayan calendar ends.
It does not end. It just passes a round figure, just like when our own calendar went from 1999 to 2000.
In 2003, other confused charlatans invented the idea that the end-of-the-Mayan-canlendar (which we know is false) means the end-of-the-world.
They had invented Planet X (causing tsunamis, pole flips, etc.) for the end-of-the-world of June 2003. When that failed, they just “recycled” their lies, stole the date from José, invented some weird “ancient prophesies” and got the Big 2012 Hoax going.

Hi Lily;
You are right. If the Mayan calendar ended on 12/21/2012 it would not mean that the world would end, any more than the world ends on December 31st of every year.
But, the Mayan calendar does *not* end on that date.

so, if we start with… the calendar doesn’t end…. can we skip the rest?

just because the mayans didnt have enough room on their circle doesnt mean the world is going to end!
