Critically examining the "End of the World"
Mayan Calendar and 2012 and Nostradamus?
The following is a question being asked on Yahoo Answers. Both the questions and answers given do not reflect the view of our website.
Question:
So why is everyone worked up about 2012?
1. remember 1999?
2. remember 2000?
3. remember 6/6/06
4. remember 7/7/07
5. from what I heard, the Mayan calendar doesn’t actual “end” on 2012. there are several calendars and the one that supposedly “ends” is the “long count” and come 12-21-12 the odometer will roll over as it will, and we’ll enter Baktun which lasts 396 years. our calendar ended in 1999 which is why people freaked out about 2000… so how do we know this won’t just roll over like that did?
6. so technically the mayan calendar is not “ending” which kind of makes these end of world doomsayers a bit premature, right?
7. did they Mayans actually SAY the world would be destroyed and come to an end? because the Mayans I’ve studied didn’t believe in an “end” persay… and it seems a lot of things I’ve read, they seem to think it was more of a metophysical end of one cycle and how it rolls into the next cycle.. the only thing I see about the Mayans claiming the world would end, is from people who put words in their mouths… kind of how they fabricate what Nostradamus wrote, or didn’t write. (like the whole “two metal birds fly into twin statues” was never a nostradamus prediction it was a fabrication.)
8. speaking of Nostradamus, people are attributing him to predicting the end of the world, when his actual predictions say the world will end in 3786 or 3797 which is what he stated in a letter to one of his sons. so where did this Nostradamus predicted the end in 2012 come from?
I guess my question is, where is all this hysteria coming from? For one… if you’re Christian you know that it states in the bible that no one knows when the end will come. It will come like a theif in the night when least expected, and only the father knows when that day will happen, so live your life like it could happen tomorrow. (in otherwords, be a good person.)
if you’re not religious, scientifically how could you buy into this with all the misinformation, inaccuracies, people faking predictions and passing them of as legit…with no solid evidence?
Yet everyone I’ve been talking to is freaking out about 2012. what about all of you?
just another day to you, or are you in a panic?

Its just another day, all the other dates you mentioned… I mean look nothing happened! Its just a play on numbers, superstitious people get hyped up about it that’s all.
Personally, I am a Christian, I believe that one day the Lord will return and there will be a rapture and the tribulation of 7 years will follow. That is just my opinion however
On a scientific prospective, I believe that if the world did end because of scientific events it wouldn’t be for hundreds of thousands, maybe even millions of years!
We all have nothing to worry about. Just live your life day to day to the fullest, trust in the Lord and place all of that in his hands. Our jobs are to be happy and concentrate on things that matter most: family, friends, our careers etc.

I don’t recall Nostradamus predicting 2012. But Nostradamus himself was bogus, don’t believe what you read on the internet, people selectively quote his writings and spread around. If you were to read his actual works, it doesn’t meant anything concrete
The end of the world doesn’t happens overnight. And its not going to happens on 2012
Its rubbish. Its more ridiculous than the Y2K rumor, which people say all communication will break down, military rendered ineffective, chaos everywhere… well, the only chaos we saw was the celebration

the key to all that 2012 end of days jazz ,is and always will be calendered on any future middle eastern news events, like what’s happening right now over there in Gaza?

Oooh, good question!
I’m honestly a little freaked out about it, but that’s only because of the close proximity of the date, not necessarily of the event itself. I also have two kids whom I’d like to see live to adulthood . . . Or maybe long enough to take the youngest to Disneyland for the first time. Seems like kind of a bummer that my oldest would only be six, and the youngest only three.

Well, as P. T. Barnum famously didn’t say, “There’s a sucker born every minute”.
@Brant: Ooh, I *like* that site
@Ken E: Veddy nice! Personally, I think ol’ Nosty had some ergot in his rye.

I’m a male virgo using my girls name angel. I believe deeply in the yin and yang of this world. The more practical side of this world. 2012 is an alignment of the sun and earth with the center of the milky way. But also freaky about this is that other planets will also take alignment on that date(history channel). So if one can imagine the forces that the moon has on our earth every second than try to envision what possible forces could come from multiple gravitational pulls on the earth at the same time. I envision the calendar flipping over just like in 2000 and maybe are earth being pulled off it’s wobble a little. But don’t get me wrong a little movement of our wobble could send us further into global “heating” or another ice age. But i could not agree with you more, TO EVERYONE- go live in peace and learn like there is no tomorrow. Because if we are domed than wtf are you gonna do about it???

it says in the bible when Jesus’ disciples asked him when he would return he said to them,
“the end will come like a thief in the night. no one knows of the day nor time. not the angels in heaven, nor the son. Only the father knows. Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come”
so basically… no one can predict when it will happen. I don’t think it will happen in our lifetime. that’s just my gut instinct.
what will happen 2012 with the whole magnetic shift and such?
Possibly earthquakes and volcanos will happen. That’s possible I can see that… however I don’t see it as the end of humanity.
I don’t know about the science mumbo jumbo but once we get to that point, it will take several lifetimes to where the shift will effect life as we know it. Most likely our kids, their kids and their kids kids won’t be here to see that effect.
that’s at least what I read in a science blog not too long ago.
Me, I’m not worried about it. I put my faith in God and pray for the best. I’m still single, I want to be married and have a family… and one day have grandkids. Obviously can’t accomplish that in 3 years, so I’m praying for a much longer life.
**I never said God would “cancel 2012″, because I don’t believe in the doomsday prophesy of 2012. I said no one can predict the end because only God knows when that will happen, so 2012 is a mute point in my opinion.
your blatant lack of disrespect for my faith and beliefs proves you’re not a religious person. I’m very sorry to hear that.

It’s coming from the Hysteria Channel, of course.
Nice rant. Loved it.
Here, you can go see lots of other failed doom predictions:
http://www.abhota.info/end1.htm
Well, drea_me_3000, you can be confident that God is going to cancel this 2012 thing and your prayers will be answered. And when it turns out that I am right, that will make me a prophet and I want you always to remember that.

I’d like to say it’ll be just another day for me, but I’ll be having way too much fun harassing everyone who thinks the world is going to end in an hour or two.

I don’t believe that 2012 is going to be the end of the world but i do believe it’ll be something like a new era. Meaning things, in one way or another, will possibly differ a lot from they do now. Humanity will reach a new level of understanding about the world, our place and the whole of the universe and spirituality.
At least i hope so. Otherwise it will another regular day one step closer to a true end of the world — World War 3

It’s all about MONEY. Panicky people buy books that make them a little more panicky. Superstitious people want to have their superstitions confirmed. Gullible people will always be gulled.
The worst I think will happen in 2012 are solar flares, which could make a mess out of satellite communications, as solar maximum will occur around that time, like its done for a few hundred million years.

21 December 2012
We hear each day “two oh one two”
The kids all ask if it is true.
“Nibiru, the planet we must fear,
Or planet X shall soon be here.
The Mayan count runs to an end.
I was told this by a friend.”
Nibiru the hoax world of Sitchin
Fit only for the garbage bin.
Devoid of fact, reason or wit,
Science laughs at all the talk of it.
Of planet “X” Nan Lieder cries,
And yet she won’t look at the skies,
To come in four short years it’s true,
The damn thing must be now in view!
“Where is it?” Science asks with glee,
“You said, ‘Beware two thousand three!’
With Earth it didn’t make a tryst,
We’re very sure it don’t exist!”
Galactic lines are the next fright,
And yet the angles are not right.
“Six degrees off!” the scientists say,
“It happens near each solstice day.”
But it would no difference make,
You can be sure the thing’s a fake.
“Planets align!” or so some say
“It will be on that very day.”
Yet naught of fact now can they quote,
I’d like to take them by the throat
And try to squeeze some truth right in,
But murder now they say’s a sin.
Failed prophets, fools, those full of fraud,
Are people with whom we all are bored.
Copyright to me, and subject to “improvement” as
and when the inspiration strikes.

The prophecy of something big and possibly nasty was invented within the past several years by woo-woo scribblers like Jose Arguelles. The Mayans predicted nothing.
I think you can discount anything in old Nosty’s verses. He only got one thing right, the death of a king of France in a jousting accident and that happened seven years before he died. He was used to support the end of the world in 2000 and doubtless other ends of the world as well, in pre-internet days. I used to have a 1999 magazine poking fun at the end of the world crowd from then with the so called prophecies of Nostradamus in it, in cartoon form.
Some people are primed to accept this stuff by the rapture doctrine developed by some American religionists back in the 1830s. One American sect or another has been predicting the end of the world every ten years or so since about 1840. Most Christians do not accept their prophecies, as you know it says no man knoweth the hour.
The idea is being promoted to sell books, videos and survival guides, possibly left over from 1999-2000 or some other end of the world that did not happen. It might also be being used to lure the unwary into religious cults.
Actually the Mayan calendar thing, a transit of Venus in June 2012 and the possible peak in the solar cycle, which may be in late 2011 are about the only things in this that approach reality.
The rest is fraud.

I’m not in a panic, simply because like you stated….many thought the world would end in 2000, but we were all just fine. However, I do know people that are completely convinced the world will end that day. What does freak me out though is the NASA predictions of significant solar activity/storms and the planetary alignment and such. That really could affect us, even if it doesn’t cause the world to come to an end.

I totally agree with you. However, some people like to moan about the ‘end’ at any given opportunity (To get attention? I never could understand them.). It’s not only dates either. Remember the LHC? A tiny, tiny chance of creating a mini black hole that would likely evaporate was blown out of proportion.
All humans like patterns, hence the 6/6/06 and 7/7/07 claims. Also, the years 1999-2000 had a great deal of significance to us. These attention seekers will attribute the ‘End of the World’ to anything and everything and will use anything to ‘prove’ them right: even if the ‘proof’ in question is ficticious.
What I heard about the Mayan calander is that it only resets to the year 0 in 2012.

The annunaki created earth, time, and christ. they live on planet nibiru and once interacted with mars.
