Critically examining the "End of the World"
Neil Degrasse Tyson debunks 2012 at the 2010 World Science Festival
Here Neil Degrasse Tyson talks of the Mayan 2012 planetary predictions. He talks about how the alignment of the Sun Earth and center of the galaxy is NOT a unique phenomenon. In fact, this alignment happens each and every year. So why is 2012 any different? He also explains many other non-scientific Mayan perceptions of cosmology. Including the observation that the Mayans thought the Earth was flat, had four corners, and was held up in space on the back of a crocodile and five trees of various bright colors. Which is in and of itself intriguing and culturally important but factually NOT TRUE.

Umm… huh?

Dr Tyson knows that he can impart knowledge to a crowd in unsuspecting ways when he has their attention. Humor helps him in imparting truths. That is an intellectual way of teaching outside the classroom.

Wow, Neil’s like a rock star in this video. It’s like the scientific discussion version of B.B. Kings “Live at the Regal”. So awesome.

u serious about these “solar activity spikes”? If so I’d say you need to do some more research,and no not just go look it up on the internet, I mean ACTUALLY do research. To be blunt, there are no solar activity spikes. None that are any more unusual than normal seeing as its the Sun and it ALWAYS has some solar activity going on. Debunk 2012. I’ll be laughing my arse off afterward. After that I’m sure you’ll come up with another excuse as to why your “2012″ theory hasn’t happened “yet”.

@yoshari
I suppose that depends on what you mean by “A-Lister”. In the original sense of a celebrity, no, but who cares. In science, he’s definitely A-list.

@ChuckyJesus666 I havent seen that movie but i hear its terrible. People who are ignorant on the matter really have no idea what they are talking about. 2012 (more like 2013 since its dec 21st 2012) is a time of great transition. what that transition will be is undetermined. It could be good, it could be bad, it could be the death of millions. I implore you to do your own research.

@Fede17 The year 2000 was completely different. That was hysteria over a computer code mishap. Even if every computer on earth broke, we would still be able to survive. This is completely different and isn’t contrast able to Y2K.

Neil never bothered to mention the solar activity spikes. Last time we had solar activity this high was 11,000 years ago. Id be interested to hear his thoughts on that. He was slightly misrepresenting the 2012 movement. there are lots of crackpot theories out there, but that doesn’t mean its all wrong. 2012 is the end of a great year, one wobble of the earth’s axis. Polarity is shifting. Plus, Just look at the world…. its fucked and getting worse.
