Help me choose:
City of Atlantis
Will the world end in 2012?

Given that the world is NOT going to end in 2012 and that every myth has a grain of truth behind it – I would choose Atlantis. At least your paper then may have some valid evidence to support it.

Atlantis –
Not only is it much more of an uplifting subject, you may find more info
on it. Also, it is a subject of many cultures’ myths.

Listen to Safyre because 2012 will be another non-event. I’ll just copy-n-paste my own answer to a previously asked similar question:
People who base their End Times predictions on the Meso-American Long Count Calendar do so because they are ignorant. This calendar comes to end December 21st. of 2012 because that is as far along as the people got in their calendar-making before they had to head for the hills. They were chipping away at stone, not computer generating their calendars. When enemies, plague or some other natural disaster over took them these people abandoned their work and fled. Remember that these people failed to predict their own end way before 2012. Why would anyone believe that they succeeded in predicting our own end when they failed to predict their own end, an event far and away more important to them than anything that could happen in the 21st. Century?
Other recent End Times predictions that failed:
Edgar Whisenant’s 88 Reasons why the Rapture would be in 1988.
July of 1999 the Great King of Terror will come from the sky… (Nostradamus).
Y2K another non-event.
And most recently: On 09/10/2008 the Large Hadron Collider will open up a Black Hole that will swallow up the Universe…
The doomsayers never have it right so don’t lose any sleep over their dribble. Write about Atlantis.

I’d do Atlantis.
As fun as when the world will end theory’s, you get more reliable info from Atlantis researchers. It’s hard to tell whats true when you talk about world end dates.

Atlantis! You have many more ancient sources to choose from. You also have many other scholarly and not so scholarly books and articles to use in your research. Plus, you have the possibility of the volcanic explosion of the island of Thera (Greek Santorini) begin confused the city of Atlantis. Use the magazine Archaeology & National Geographic for pulling together some basic information.
The Maya myths can be quite difficult to comprehend and there are fewer reasonable research sources.

Do it on the date of the worlds end. Dec 21 2012. My husband’s birthday. Besides there are oodles info that you can find on, was it the Mayans or Aztecs whose calender this is based on, the math behind the prediction and how everything else on the SAME calender came to be.

I think you could do an interesting project on 2012, but not mainly focusing on the Mayans. Instead, use the 2012 nonsense as a jumping off point to review the numerous End Of The World prophecies there have been throughout history. There have been no shortage of these in Judeo-Christian culture, dating back to the Book of Revelations and even before.
Why do some people apparently need to believe the world is always about to end? Is there a particular sort of person who falls for this nonsense? What sort of things do they do as the day approaches? How do they react when the sun comes up exactly as normal on the following morning? How do those who made the prophecies react and how do their followers treat them? Does anyone learn anything from the failure, or do they simply start looking for the next date when it all will end?

Atlantis – more realistic and interesting

There have been many dates set in the past that have been supposedly said to be the end of the world. Well none of them came true and we’re still alive and breathing. The Mayans were the ones that came up with the date of Dec. 21 2012. Did they foresee anything to point them to that date? The answer is no. That date only refers to the day that their calendar system ends at. So pretty much setting up a time stamp on when the world will end is impractical and ridiculous. The world today is so volatile and we are armed with weapons that can destroy the planet multiple times over. Who knows, the world could end tomorrow with a single touch of a button.
With that said, putting your research towards an ancient advanced civilization would be a more ideal choice. Were they just a city or were they an empire covering an entire continent? Did remnants of their culture survive beyond to other civilizations or even today? Why are there so many tales and legends from different civilizations from all over the globe that talks about a global flood and sunken continent? Coincidence or correlation? You’ll probably have more fun looking into this topic compared with a silly date. =)
