Question:
I posted this question a few minutes ago and deleted it because I got two nasty emails insulting me. This is just a question, and doesnt suggest what my beliefs are, or what I have or havent read ( thanks anyway for those who were concerned).
In my YA travels the past day or so, there seem to be many questions circulating around about the world ending (relating to the Mayan calendar), and political comment about the anti christ turning up while Obama is in office. I have found some of these arguments interesting to read.
The list goes on, but I can’t help but compare it to the hype and fear around 1999 when we were on the eve of the new millenium. People thought the world would be in chaos, and I even remember media suggesting people buy supplies of water and extra food since it was possible we wouldn’t be waking up to our normal world, and violent looting could possibly take place so we should stay indoors.
The worst outcome of the year 2000 was a world wide jump in hangovers, but seriously, for decades ( actually centuries) stories go around about the end of the world, apparitions of the virgin Mary, false prophets, the fall of the world…….(fill in the gap here with whatever you can think of to add).
I think the www. contributes to it, since it’s a powerful form of information and at your fingertips ( yeah, literally and no pun intended) but in the past things have been predicted and not become reality.
Remember the huge dust storm on the 22 Sept this year? It happened in Broken Hill, NSW, Australia. The town turned pitch black dark, during the end of the school day. (There is a link to it in you tube) Some students thought it was the end of the world.
Hype has the huge ability to sweep a tidal wave of people along with it, and sometimes for nothing.
No matter how convincing evidence is currently, that isnt always proof of the outcome to be. Predictions dont ALWAYS come true.
Do you agree/disagree? I am just looking for opinions, thank you.
