Does the Mayan calender really predict the end of the world in 2012?

And even if it does, why does that matter? I know they were brilliant astronomers, but what does that haave to do with anything?
From what I’ve read, the Mayan calender is based on a complex series of cycles within cycles. The “Long Count” is set to end in december 2012. That calender has to end sometime, right? Why does everyone claim that the Mayan’s marked this as the end of the world, rather than resetting the date to 0 the same we we reset our year to 00, or our time to 00? A lot of this 2012 excitement comes from the date the mayans set, but it looks the the Mayans weren’t even predicting the end of the world (and once again, so what if they were?)
Just to add, I think the end of the world stuff is a load of crap, even more so since it seems to be based on a completely false premise.
I bet that if the mayan calender didn’t end in 2012 no one would see the other destruction theories. Because Nostradamus says very vague things that will probably apply at some point in the rest of history. And because the bible doesn’t come anywhere close to setting an end date.
According to Nostradamus, what is supposed to happen in 2012? Also, what correct things did he predict?

Raises in number and intensity from earthquakes to Tsunamis to Hurricanes to every other naturally occuring weather related event.
Is all of it because of and proof of the fact that the Earth’s rotation is going to shift in the very near future?
The sun already has changed it’s rotational shift.

Why are people worried about the year 2012 when in fact almost all of the prophecies predict positive things?

It seems to me that the prophecies about 2012 actually predict good things to happen. They talk about great leaps and transformations for humankind.
So why all the fear and anxiety?
All the other stuff, like Peak Oil and Timewave Zero is just stuff that modern people have made up and convienently decided will happen in 2012.
There’s really nothing to worry about.
And the whole idea of a planet on a collision course with Earth was totally discredited years ago.
The Mayan Calendar ends December 21, 2012. But did the Mayans predict that anything would happen on that day?

No one disagrees that the Mayan calendar ends – for what ever reason – in December of the year 2012. Some day its December 21st and some say its December 23rd.
Anyway, did the Mayans actually tell us what would happen when their calendar ends?
I don’t get it. But it is very interesting.
