Critically examining the "End of the World"
The “2012″ Theory/Hoax?
The following is a question being asked on Yahoo Answers. Both the questions and answers given do not reflect the view of our website.
Question:
I of course know that Nothing will happen AT ALL or unusual in 2012, Who would believe such things, But these Websites are sort of Scaring me =l Will it happen? Yes or no,
Check this website: http://2012-comet.com/ (Its the one what scared me) But i stick to universetoday.com that guy proves nothing unusual will happen in 2012, But do you in fact believe something will happen?

It was never a “Theory.” It hurts to see the word so misused.

Who cares? No the world WILL NOT END> why do people believe this silly stuff?

In a word…no. I don’t believe the world will end.
The 2012 thing comes from the Mayan Calendar, as most people are aware who have heard anything about this. The Mayans did have a quite a few very perplexing things in their culture. They had an amazing knack for Astronomy, and managed to predict a great deal of celestial events.
Now, two things are very true about December 21, 2012:
1. The Mayan Long Count Calendar ends.
2. The sun will be precisely between the Milky Way and the galactic equinox, perfectly aligned with the center of the galaxy.
What does that mean? Well, the alignment thing is not as spectacular as some may say…it’s happened before. Every 26,000 (approx) years…about 150k times already.
And as far as the calendar? Unfortunately, we don’t know as much about the Mayan culture as we’d like…thank to Spain slaughtering them and burning anything of theirs that they got their hands on. Still, we know that the Mayans did not believe in the concepts of “beginning” and “end”. They saw everything as cyclical. So it very well may be the beginning of a new time.
Oh and as far as planet x, or Niribu, or whatever…mention it to any scientist and they will laugh.
The story behind it is actually pretty funny, but more to the point: It doesn’t exist and never has. A planet with an orbit of 3600 years is physically impossible, it would drift off into space or close it’s orbit.
Nearly every “fact” surrounding is complete rubbish. So if you’re going to be scared of anything, that’s not something to worry about.

The website you cite mostly talks about Nostradamus, who seems to have been little more than a tool of war mongers and propagandists to frighten into submission the masses.
Stick to Universe Today or Spaceweather.com for what is really happening.

You need to avoid sites like 2012-comet.com. You can only expect to read a load of baloney. Try sticking with NASA and the Minor Planet Center websites for your information.
Note to Voodoo Coder:
The Sun will not be precisely between Milky Way and the galactic equinox. You need to do a bit more research. Perhaps you could say exactly what you mean by “galactic equinox”? I’ll bet you can’t. Any astronomical event or “alignment” on 21st December 2012, other than the solstice, is an invention of the cranks.

It’s all an INTERNET HOAX!

The world is not going to end in 2012. The link you gave is not a reliable website. It is just someone else promulgating the 2012 hoax. Nostradamus predicted nothing about 2012. The Mayans did not predict the end of the world. It is only the end of an age of their long-count calendar and the beginning of a new age. If Nibiru existed and was going to hit us in 2012, astronomers would be seeing it now.
There is no actual scientific theory or evidence that anything unusual is going to happen in 2012. It is a collection of myths and disproven theories being promulgated by doomsday predictors, who predict a new one every few years.
It is based on the end of the current cycle of the Mayan long count calendar. Their calendar was done in ages or cycles and their years ended at the winter solstice. The current cycle ends December 21, 2012. They didn’t predict the end of the world, it was only the end of that cycle.
Nibiru (Planet X) doesn’t exist. Zecharia Sitchin is an author of books promoting the ancient astronaut theory for human origins. He attributes the creation of the ancient Sumerian culture to the Annunaki (or Nephilim) from a hypothetical planet named Nibiru in the solar system. The Doomsayers predicted that it was to hit Earth in 2003. Undaunted when it didn’t show up, they just moved it out to 2012 to coincide with the end of the Mayan calendar.
Galactic Alignment – There is no galactic alignment occurring in 2012. It takes 36 years to precess through galactic equator, and we will be 6 degrees off in 2012. Even if we did have an alignment, it would have no effect on us. The vast distances involved outweigh the effects of gravity.
Asteroid Apophis – the 2001 alert was for 2029, and was canceled after additional observations showed it would not hit us.
Polar Shift – the magnetic poles are moving all the time. Polar reversals have occurred in the past, but we can’t predict when they will occur again.
Passage through a “photon belt” has been added. This is also untrue and wouldn’t hurt us if it were. Photons are merely units of light.
Solar flares happen all the time and we have more of them at some times than others. They haven’t caused any serious problems in the past. The direct effects of solar flares are mainly related to communications and radio transmissions. We had a major series of solar flares in 2005.
