The Mayan calendar ends in 2012. Would the Mayans be as fearful as the common modern person?

The following is a question being asked on Yahoo Answers. Both the questions and answers given do not reflect the view of our website.
Question:
Would the Mayans themselves be fearful of the date 2012 on their own calendar, or would they simply sit down and prepare a fresh calendar for the coming new age?

  1. Can’t answer that. I’m not Mayan.

  2. No. They’d just be writing out a new calendar.

    As would every other culture.
It’s just a couple morons who blow it out of proportion :)

  3. Nope! If the mayans were still around, they would just simply “reset” their calendar, and start it up again, so to speak. ;-}

I doubt it. The guy who was writing down the calander was probably tired of writing down numbers so he just stopped. Don’t listen to those people who say that the world is gonna end in 2012. They’re just ignorant.

  5. Who’s fearful ?

Funny thing, scientists have a theory that on the very day of 12/21/12, the poles could shift spots, which would cause a worldwide earthquake (which is biblical),
the poles shift every 30,000 years or so (they’re not sure if it happens all at once, or not…)
and we’re only alligned in the solar system like we are on that day every 30,000 years….
…it’s just a theory.. it’ll be on a friday, though. ill just have to keep my eyes peeled on that day haha

  7. The Mayan calander does not end. It is just the end of a cycle.

  8. Violet Clockwork on March 19th, 2010 at 11:59 am

Actually, they would wait for the day to appear, find the shift in government or religion and tailor their next age according to it.

  9. I’m a common modern person, and no, i’m not fearful. Neither were the Maya.

  10. The Mayan calendar does not end in 2012, any more than our calendar ends at a decade or century. It is cyclic and 2012 is the end of one of their cycles.

As far as I know, they had no major beliefs associated with the end of a cycle.

  11. no I feel like they would have accepted their fate by now… I mean what happened when they actually got wiped out? Were they all like “but its not in the prophecy” well sorry dudes… I don’t think 2012 is going to happen either… haha.

Yeah like the mayans know everything, they died out long ago. What did the calander say for them back then.

  13. i DOUBT IT ! The Mayans were probably smarter than the average . OH, My calender is ending on DEC 31st .——————- I need to pick up a new one

  14. 2012 isn’t going to happen, they said the world was going to end how many times and it even happened? Before 2012 it was 2006. Then 2000. And 1990, 1988, 1987, 1986, 1985, 1984, 1982, 1980, 1975, 1974, 1970, 1967, 1960, 1957, 1953, 1948, 1940, 1936, 1919, 1915, 1914, 1891, 1856, 1850, 1844, 1832, 1830, 1794, 1792, 1736, 1689, 1669, 1533, 1524, 1496, 1346, 1284, 1205, 1033, 1005, 1000, 992, 968, 500, 375, 365, 200, 90, 60, 30. SEE!! The end hasn’t came and all this shows they are wrong!! Through out history the end has been predicted but has never happened so, whats the point of worrying? NOW there talking about something is going to happen in 2020 something about we are never going to see a winter ever again and California is going to get the winter and we’re going to get there weather, and something about 2035 etc…… Nothing is going to happen.

  15. No, I don’t think they would.
I think, because of their deep devotion and “understanding” they would have come to terms with the whole notion that the world was coming to a close.
Forgive my ignorance, but I don’t know what they believe is to follow. I think that if they believed that an afterlife existed or a new birth was to occur, then they would have been preparing for that “chapter”.
I think that the modern person that is fearful of 2012 being the end is only fearful because they are not prepared for what may be next.

  16. I’ve heard of that too. Supposedly the calendar ends on 12/21/2012 or something like that. Some people say that this is the end of the earth, others say that it’s just that the calendar just ends on this date – it’s the beginning of a new cycle. What’s interesting to note is that many cultures – Chinese, British, ancient Romans, etc – also cite this SPECIFIC date as the end of the earth, and before this happens, the earth will become increasingly chaotic and disturbed, and indeed it’s almost the end of 2008 and the environment out there IS becoming more disturbed. NASA also predicts a major solar storm in 2012. Others say that aliens will return to earth that day, and we’ll succumb to their rule with our inferior technology. Some say that our own technological advances will lead to our undoing and Earth will be drowned in a deluge of bloodshed with a massive nuclear war (presumably US vs Russia, because these 2 countries have the largest stockpiles in the world). There are many options out there for the end of the world, take your pick!

The History Channel had an hour-long special on this maybe 1 or 2 years ago. You can see it on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYZtMwIPb4c&feature=related. It’s a very popular video with 120,000+ views already.

Whatever does happen, just make sure you seize the day (Latin for that is “carpe diem”), enjoy and live life to the fullest. You can’t control what’s to come, and worrying for the next 4 years would just be VERY miserable.

Good news is that myths can be wrong — for example, the Y2K bug never came. Who knows? It could just be the basic human nature to be pessimistic and to prepare for and expect the worst. Even this myth could end up wrong, but this time the situation out there – with the economic crisis – seems a little bit more promising.

No… I think they just couldn’t be bothered to do a next calendar, or didn’t get around to it. Just like on my phone where the calendar only goes up to the year 2099.

  18. im sorry but i fail to notice any common modern person being fearful of the approach of 2012

I do have friends that believe the world will somehow end on that year (some biblical, some scientific phenomenom, some UFO beliefs) yet none of them could be described as “fearful”

but no I don’t believe they would be fearful. Actually I believe that maybe they just ended their calander on that date because they decided it was enough, they were tired, and didn’t want to calculate anymore. Really, what would the point have been if they calculated further? it was so far in the future they might have decided to do the rest at a later date in history and never got the chance.

  19. they were just recording a cycle of celestial movement. they would start back at the beginning.

  20. Its the end of the age of pices. We are going into a different constalation. I am not sure if its aquarius or aries, I think aquarius, but I am not sure. Astrology played a major part in many religions throughout history. You can see it in the statues left by the egyptians, the ram statues, the lion, all becuase we were under that constallation when they were built. Under that constalation means the sun would rise under that constalation, I am not entirely sure how to explain this. Anyway, every few thousand years we move onto the next one.

Right now we are under Pices and Virgo. Some people believe this is where the virgin and the Christian fish come from. I don’t know what VIrgo means it my have nothing to do with the word Virgin.

The world as we know it may end. Meaning, not the world in entirety just major major changes. SOme people say that the end of an age corresponds to major destrucitve events, not wiping out every one just alot, and there is almost always a change in the “god’ at that point. CHristianity has been powerful for the last 2,000 or so years, somehting else may be next. Aquarius is not something to be messed with, a symbol of extreme vanity and pride. Satan is supposedly vain and proud, and Christians are looking for the anti-Christ. It is possible that the ancient people who wrote the book took some of this into consideration. I mean, these things developed over thousands of years,, and in BC no one had identified astrology as an occult religion, it was just done. And Jews were in Egypt, accoriding to them, to not believe that they absorbed some of Egypts practices would be absurd.

  21. Considering that the Mayan civilization was destroyed over three hundred years ago, I bet nobody’s bothered to write a new calendar. I don’t fear the Mayan’s prediction of the end of the world any more than I fear the Christian prediction. Neither are supported by fact.

  22. They would have a huge celebration. Making it to the end of a cycle was seen as a great thing. They would party hearty once every 144,000 days (395 years), and once the partying was over, they would go back to working and living as usual. It was an exciting thing, like watching that big ol’ 1999 switch over to 2000. It was a good thing accompanied by much celebration. Just like with us, there was also an attitude of hope that the stuff happening in the “new age” would be an improvement over that of the “old age.” It’s a feeling of a fresh start. We’re talking about happiness, relief, celebration…good things. It was a big deal, but it wasn’t a fearful disaster kind of thing.
