well something shall end im sure of that but it was never really specified if it was something big or small so for all we know it may be something as simple as a huge storm or something like a huge war who knows

The most likely cause of a total annihilation of mankind is an impact from a large comet/asteroid. It has happened to other species before. But it isn’t any more likely to happen in 2012 than in 2011 or 2013.

the mayan calendar does not stops there. they stopped there only because this is the end of their present “era” Starting on the winter soltice of 2012, according to the mayan calendar we will enter in a new era of interior peace. Where, according to them, our eternal peace will be granted.
Also. on that date the earth will enter in a new contellation, so this is the end of the rotation in the earth in the present constellation (mayen knew that also)
