Critically examining the "End of the World"
What do you think about the Mayan calendar ending on Dec 21, 2012?
The following is a question being asked on Yahoo Answers. Both the questions and answers given do not reflect the view of our website.
Question:
the Mayan calendar is the oldest and most accurate astrological clock to date. Its long count scale is ending in 2012, a 56,000 yr cycle. What does that mean to you. If you were given a ruler in which each inch was a different length would that be an accurate way to measure? Then why do we use months with diff. amount of days to measure time?

I think they were amazing astronomers, and also find it interesting that Cortez came on the same day that they predicted the god Queztacoatl would come.
If it is, then it doesn’t matter.

You are asking a lot of different questions here. As for the Mayan calendar ending in Dec 2012, if the world does end, it sure looks to me like we deserve it. We haven’t done a very good job of taking care of each other or this planet.
Regarding your question about months having different numbers of days, I think that has its roots in ancient Greek or Roman times. I’m sure you can find it if you do research on the Gregorian calendar and the Julian calendar.
Many cultures now use or have used in the past, a lunar calendar which has 13 months of 28 days each.

It’s a symbolic ending, nothing literal. Should be a nice way to cash in on suckers that think the world will end, though. I plan on getting filthy rich.

I think they’re going to need a new calendar for 2013.
Most tire shops give ‘em away for free.
Ooh… Good idea, Razztek…
Now I gotta come up with something…

Well with it ending on Dec 21, 2012 it will be the end of one cycle and move into a new one. With regards to our solar system’s position in our galaxy.

A lot of people see this as the end of the world. I think that everyone wonders when the end of the world is going to be because of “signs” that we need to follow. A lot of the mayan prophecies has taken place. And predicting some things so accurately at least 3000 years into the future tells you something about the mayans. The mayans also said that after this period people on earth will leap forward towards more awareness and understanding. Heaven on earth or as above so below.
If you read up on what the maoris say about the end of days they have a lot in common with the mayans and they live on different continents. (New Zealand not really continent though
A more scientific point of view though is that 7km (can’t remember exactly how far up but i think this is what i read) above the earth there is an area called the ionsphere. This area influence our body and mind due to its frequency. This frequency used to be 7.8hz and is increasing dramatically. It is at 14hz at the moment. Can we connect this with what the mayans and maoris where on about? dont know. But even revelations (meaning the awakening) is talking about heaven on earth. I know i talk talk too much but to cut it short. I think that this date is going to be very significant to the human race/mother earth. As an end to the world as we know it now.

It means the same thing to me as the Aztec calendar that ended in the 1990s.

i think they ran out of paper or got bored in doing a calender
i heard that the world would end on that day so is it a last day for us or a last day for the mayans meaning thier rein ends (even though it ended hunderds of years ago (i think)) and a new civiliisation begins

My answer is not about when the when time comes to a stop, nor when the world will end, but has more to do with living a rich and full life, doing the right thing by your fellow human beings, and understanding that there is no promise of tomorrow for any of us. I take life one day at a time, tell those who mean something to me that I love them. I have made peace a long time ago with my maker, and am alright living in the here, and now. I cannot worry for what tomorrow brings, for I cannot control events in the future. I accept that I have a place in time, and do what I can for my fellow human being. Perhaps this is over-simplified, but it is how I live, and may very well the way that I die…with no worries.

their calendar was cyclical.. this cycle ends in that particular Gregorian day… then another cycle begins…… is it the end of the world as we know it?….. if someone was to die today..would it not be his end of his world?
