What is the theory about solar flairs, etc. in 2012 and what is the likelihood that they will happen?

I have heard a lot of different theories about what will happen towards the end of 2012. Is there a way to know if it will really happen? What do you think will happen?

Solar flares do occur, but the solar maximum is expected in 2013.
And solar flares did occur before, we’re still here, aren’t we?
You did not hear “theories” about 2012, as far as the scientific meaning of “theory” goes; you heard delirious speculations from crooks with books to sell.
There is a way of knowing what will (not) happen: wait until 2013.
As far as I am concerned, here is what I think will happen: a big fat nothing.

2012 works like a rumor. It started as the end of the Mayan calendar and maybe someone joked it meant time would stop or something. And from there it grew. It’s all a bunch of shit. Maybe it will be true though, but the whole civilization of Maya was wiped out by a small fleet of Spaniards so I don’t think they were very smart…

in 2012, ionic interference from the sun will peak, and communications will suck, but other than that, nothing major. no ELE, no solar flare, just Hollywood acting like… Hollywood

Absolutly nothing. Just because all the planets line up does not mean that their gravity will suddenly intensify. The gravity effecting the sun will still be the same. Solar flairs are caused when the magnetic feild with in the sun reacts with its self and then causes a mass coronal ejection OR a solar flair, so there is no need for panic AND at the moment the sun is currently enerting a period of relitive low activity, lowest thats been on record for the past hundered years so I assure you there is nothing to fear

The sun has an 11-year cycle of – 2013 (not 2012) is just the next maximum of this cycle.
The lsst max was in 2001 – did anyone notice anything or any unusual solar flares? Nope.
Solar flares happen all the time, and they never get far from the sun’s surface. However, a strong flare that also has a coronal mass ejection (CME) that is headed in our direction at the right time and with the right polarity can cause some damage to satellites, electronics, and possibly our power grids.
There is NO way to predict the next flare or CME so there is no way to predict what might happen in 3 years.

Solar flares and coronal mass ejections happen all the time, just less frequently during a solar activity minimum. The Earth has been through five or six solar flares or CMEs since April, and you were entirely unaware of it it. The sun is monitored 24/7/365 by a half dozen satellites. We usually have 2 to 4 days warning before a solar flare or CME rotates around to face the Earth. I monitor http://www.spaceweather.com/ at least once a day for the last two or more years when I have computer access, and http://www.solen.info/solar/ for more than three and half years.
I suspect this calm period we are in now is the final calm before solar activity really starts ramping up asymptotically, but I could be wrong.

calling anything to do with 2012 a theory is an insult to the definition of a theory.
no reputable scientist thinks that anything significant is going to happen, there are no absurd planets coming towards us no doomsday rocks, no sumerian gods and no end of the world, i am guessing that the solar flares are thrown in there now just because of the movie “the knowing”.
odds are that nothing will happen, the people that think something is going to happen try to use a horrible mixture of mayan, sumerian and judeo-christian gobbledygook to fool and confuse people into buying their weak doomsday ideas. don’t fall for it.
the mayans and sumerians did not think that the world was going to end in 2012, the mayan calendar ends in 2012 this is a fact, but i think that it was like y2k, a time so far into the future that the mayans just didn’t worry about it.
and odds are the sumerians had no idea that the mayans existed at all, in fact the sumerians lived a long time before the mayans and it is very unlikely that any “knowledge” from the sumerians made it over to the mayans but was somehow ignored by the europeans, russians and all of asia.
so yeah i’m kinda sick of these 2012 questions, lol

The next Solar maximum is now expected in May 2013. We can’t predict individual Solar flares, but they aren’t a danger to us. They may affect electronics and communications. Solar maxima happen about every 11 years and they have never hurt us.
I don’t expect anything unusual in 2012. All the claims about ancient prophecies, rogue planets, and alignments are false. They have all been made up by charlatans and crackpots to get your money.

All sorts of crazy things are being predicted, as all the loonies pile on more and more “predictions.”
Since you mention solar flares, I’ll say a bit about them. They happen all the time on the Sun, and nobody but solar physicists pays much attention. Sometimes they trigger coronal mass ejections, which sometimes cause auroras on Earth, which are pretty to look at. Once in a couple of decades, they cause a bit of damage to the electrical system, but we now know about this and take precautions.
Now the thing about solar flares is that they are totally unpredictable. Statistically they are more common near solar maximum and less common near solar minimum, but that has no value in predicting specific flares. Solar maximum on average comes every 11 years, which normally would put it in 2012. However, the Sun has gotten stuck in solar minimum. It should have started producing sunspots and flares, but it hasn’t (much). So the solar maximum prediction has been postponed to May 2013, long after Doomsday. Tough for the prediction boys.

The idea for solar flares in 2012 was invented for the movie “Knowing”.
The global tsunami was invented for the movie called “2012″ (even though it was part of the 2003 end-of-the-world hoax — the one for which Planet X was originally invented).

I find it odd that you joined today and this is your first and only question. This is the mark of a troll.
A theory has observational or mathematical or historical evidence to support it.
No 2012 scenario has any of this support. They are all conjectures created by persons hoping to make a quick and easy buck from the less informed. Also known as hoaxes.
If you have “heard a lot of different theories” then you have been misguided by fools or you have improperly used search engines to seek and find trash.
Use the internet wisely.
Allow skepticism to overrule gullibility when there is no supportive proof.
Thinking or believing something will happen is religion. Not science.
Yes, there is a way to know truth. Rely on scientific websites and journals. Not internet pseudowebsites trying to make a quick buck any way they can.
Our Sun goes through natural solar cycles every 11 years. Periods of unusually high solar flair activity is proportional to sunspot activity. This solar maximum was characterized by an unusually long solar minimum. The concluding scientific fact is that the 2012 2013 solar maximum will be weaker than average. Less sunspots than normal maximums. And little solar flair activity.
Every time you see the Aurora Borealis it is caused by a solar flare. So don’t let this hyped up hoax create unnecessary fear where none should exist.

The ideas circulated are vague and contradictory, indicating the lack of scientific validity to them.
The sun spot cycle is well documented and nothing to worry about in general. There is always the chance of a major flare inducing all manner of electronic problems, but this will be like the 2003 power outage in the NW USA and Canada. If it happens it will not be the end of the world.

These predictions are scare tactics, conspiracy theories, and chances to make money from books and movies.
Ever since the Y2K and 6/6/6 (June 6, 2006) End of the World scenarios did not pan out, the scare mongers, conspiracy theorists, book sellers, and television executives have been touting the 2012 End of the World scenario. When 2012 does not happen either, I am sure they will think of something else.

Jesus told us in no uncertain terms that we were not to know when the end of the world would come but that we were always to be ready.
The early Christian Church thought that Jesus was going to return at any moment. Only after a couple of centuries did the Church realize that it may be 2,000 or 4,000 or 8,000 years before Jesus returns.
The Catholic Church wisely follows Jesus’ advice and teaches that each of us should live as if we will meet our maker in the next ten minutes and that we need to work to make the world a better place for our 100 X great-grandchildren.
Do not worry about the end of the world. Trust God to make sure everything happens to plan. Just be ready to meet God at any time.

The Sun does have a certain “flair”. I am sure, she will have it in 2012 as well.
People often mistake the homonym “Sun” with “Son” and think our Sun is masculine, but that is ludicrous! The Sun had a wild youth, followed by regular “cycles” well into her… you have to say it… “middle” years. Now, she is getting a little irregular. Perhaps, who knows, they will stop altogether.

I’ve heard Spider-man 6 is coming out on 2013, don’t know if it’s true or not. Google it, you’ll find it out. Anyway, so does that prove a little? I have one more proof. You just have to wait a little bit longer. When I wake up alive on December 22, 2012, I will give you the best proof that it’s not true. Sorry if I’m being too complicated!

Okay so theres alot of crap thats going about 2012 so what I see thats going to happin is something going to happin that’ll bring everyone close and not judge anyone accept who they are..
