Where did the theory that 2012 would be the apocalypse originate?
The following is a question being asked on Yahoo Answers. Both the questions and answers given do not reflect the view of our website.
Question:
I have heard many theories as to what would happen:
-Something about aliens
-Something about the Mayans
-Nuclear era
etc.
So where did these theories originate, and do you believe or fear any of these apocalyptic hypotheses.
Can someone more clearly explain the Mayan theory to me. I don’t understand that one.
Their Almanac ended in 2012.
The Mayans predicted something would happen. They were right about the other years they predicted hopefully they’re terribly wrong about 2012! I’d be in my first year of college!
Some guy who works at KFC came up with it.
…in the minds of someone (at the time) with a great imagination and a little bit of to much time on their hands
The fact that the world will end 2012 originated when it was said the Mayan calendar would have ended. You see, it was a continuous cycle of the years, but apparently, this cycle will end sometime in December of 2012. Don’t believe any of this rubbish. Sure the Mayan calendar will end, and I respect that, but I highly doubt the world will end
Some calander created by a Native American group ends in 2012 they didnt state it is the end of the world rather a major change to humanity or the world. They supposibly predicted a change to occur after them which they predicted in time with the arrival of Colombus and European colonization of America ie New world it was a new phase in humanity. This 2012 can also be one of this but its said to be a bigger change.
I dont believe some primitive paranormal people predicting the future but we could always be surprised the only big change I could think of would be us discovering ET or ET discovering us because I know there is a ET in this universe and the day we find them it will be a major change the biggest in fact to Humanity and many aspects to many of our lifes will have to change ie religion would collapse.
Mayans Calender ends there.
it was when the mayan calender ended
Some believe that since the Mayan calender ends on Dec 21, 2012, that this is the end of the world. In my personal opinion, it’s a little foolish to believe all of this because if the Mayans couldn’t even predict the fall of their own civilization, how could they have predicted the end of the world thousands of years later?
The internet is a great place for people to make up a hoax, and end-of-the-world hoaxes are great ways for businesses to make a lot of money.
Before anyone believes in this whole 2012 hoax, it’s important to remember that if information from the internet is going to be relied upon, make SURE that the website ends with “.gov”.
There’s an awesome website sponsored by Nasa.gov, called “ask an astrobiologist”. There are plenty of questions and answers regarding 2012 and the planet Nibiru hoax =]

Their calendar was more precise than anyone elses, even our present day. For their time, their calculations were amazingly accurate. 2012 is just the end of their baktun cycle, I think the 13th cycle. But they didn’t begin a 14th cycle… it just ended. Who knows… maybe that’s when they were conquered. Or perhaps something will change in human history at that time. The world won’t end though, it endures forever, through everlasting generations. End of the world Biblical scenarios are misinterpreted as planet-ending, but it’s actually age-ending… the end of the old covenant age. (approx 70ad)
