Why are Christians so concerned about 2012 and the Mayan calendar?

The following is a question being asked on Yahoo Answers. Both the questions and answers given do not reflect the view of our website.
Question:
It’s based upon that “evil” astrology which your church forbids (and just happens to be the basis of our system of time itself,) and the Mayan’s were considered savage devil worshippers by the good Christians that came over here and murdered them in the name of Jesus. Is it because deep inside you know that the Church has been telling lies for 1700 years, and you realize that your very own bible is heavily based upon astrology?

    idk either

  2. LOL Christians are NOT the one’s concerned…if anything they should be the ones arguing against it–our religion explains the contrary

    Stop insinuating lies

    Mark 13
32″No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33Be on guard! Be alert[f]! You do not know when that time will come. 34It’s like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with his assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch.

35″Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. 36If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. 37What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!’ “

  3. satans been telling u lies

  4. If you’re gullible enough to believe that the Bible is the inspired word of an all-knowing creator, you’re gullible enough to believe any old superstition.

  5. OH come on now!
CAN WE STOP THE 2012 BS IN HERE?

  6. I’m not

  7. Christians are dumb. Keep reading that bible, you idiots.

I’m not. What are you even talking about?

  9. anomaly

  10. I must be missing something.

I’ve yet to meet any Christian who believes or even considers that prediction.

I have yet to hear any Christian on radio or TV talk seriously about this prediction.

Don’t forget in the first chapter of the Bible it says the stars were put there for signs to be used by people. Genesis 1:14

That ought to scare a few more fundies.

  12. there not….the bible clearly states that we wont know when only that a buttload of natural disasters and wars and all that will start happeining.

  13. No – it is because many (not all, maybe not even most) Christians are looking forward to the Rapture – so any “evidence” that the end of the world is approaching is good news to them. They’re willing to ignore the contradictions involved in glorifying pagan sources, because it supports their personal goals of the moment.

Armageddon would solve everything, after all.

  14. Uh, it’s not the Christians that are worried at all about 2012, but rather the atheists. Hmm… I wonder why that is! God bless everyone!

  15. hahahah it’s not based on astrology? if you’re watching the history channel right now they’re talking about what MERLIN based his predictions on. go attack some joke religion like scientology, whose bible and beginnings are based on a sci-fi- novel

  16. because fear fills up the churches, filled up churches make more money. Keep god personal, god is inside you and there is no reason to fear death. by the way you sound a little angry, let it go and be happy. If you dweel on it, you dwell in it.

  17. No, i never knew anyone sho was taught that. That was something that happened hundreds of years ago that none of us can control now.

Also, i think its cool how the aztec and mayan calenders have been right about many things and its kind of just for fun to believe this, no ones really going to prepare for the end of the world or quit their jobs.

  18. Yes, that may be it, but people who teach dark doctrines are bound to be unhappy, so they may just be wishing for a way out. More on my bio.

  19. I didn’t realize that Christians were into this hoax. It seems to be kind of a teenager thing, apart from any particular religious belief. Just kids watching dumb documentaries on TV and getting all spooked.

  20. Christians need to understand that there is no cosmic end to planet earth. The Bible talks about an “end” but that was simply the “end of an age.” – the old covenant 1500 year old Mosaic system that ruled the world at that time. That age ended in AD70 during the Roman Jewish War. The old covenant became obsolete. That is all Revelation is talking about – it is almost all figurative and apocalypic language which the early Christians understood perfectly. They were not wrong in expecting their Savior to return within their lifetime. They walked and talked with Him… do we really think they were mistaken? I’m sure they asked Jesus over and over again, and He answered them with signs… signs that if you study history, you will see have already happened.

So because most Christians are trying to hasten the “end” of the world, (which has no end: Eph 3:21, Eccles 1:4 and Psalm 104:5) they are looking for the next possibility, which is 2012, the end of the Mayan long count calendar. They fail to see that the new heavens and earth is already here in the form of the new covenant – God’s restoration with mankind in the spiritual realm. His Kingdom was never a physical one, flesh and blood cannot inherit it! It does not come w/ observation, and it is within the believer.

  21. i honestly didnt even know it was a christian thing what are you tlking about lol i think itsmore bcuz of nostradamus and i think its not the end of the world but an apocalypse and i think its going to happen because the world is changing like the weather and stuff i think theres going to be a whole lotta natural disasters.. im not even christian but if i was thts a lil offensive i dont evn believe in religion but if thts wat they believe its not nice to put other religions down

  22. WHAT THE HECK? WHICH CHRISTIANS ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? I’m Christian, and most of my friends and family are Christian and I haven’t heard anything like that. And you really can’t go accusing of us of lying like that. Let’s see our Bible teaches: Killing is bad. Being kind to others is good. We should not give up. Lying is bad….Now come on even YOU have to agree all those things are true?

The age of Aries was ended with the birth of Christ, who came as the lamb. The sign of Aries, the Ram. Then began the age of Pisces, the age of the fish. What is the chief symbol for Christianity, the fish. The next age is the Age of Aquarius, whose symbol is the water carrier and whose sign is opposite and therefore in conjunction with Leo. Leo is the lion and Christ is prophesied to “return as the lion” and the prophecy is also made that the lion shall lay down with the lamb because Christ is both lion and lamb

The church has not been lying at all. Christ was the messiah of mankind, but his return cannot be rushed and his return shall be foreshadowed by the same sign that foreshadowed his birth

  25. Most Christians don’t actually believe that world is going to end a 2012. People have been talking about the end of the world for thousands of years. The world ending in 2012 is never mentioned in the Bible in fact Jesus didn’t know when the world will end (Matthew 24:35-36). I don’t get how your not so subtle attack on Christianity fits in here, but the idea that Christianity is based off of pagan astrology is almost as ridiculous as the number of Apocalypse theories. A thing that sets Christianity apart from a lot of religions in the lack of astrology.

Christians concerned? I’m not concerned at all. How do you come up with the bible based on astrology? Can you give me references to what you say, or did someone tell you that?

  27. I’m not concerned about 2012 at all.

    Matthew 24
36 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.
42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.

Any prediction of the end of the world I don’t believe. I believe we are in the end times, but who knows how long it will be till it ends…

    Matthew 24:6-8
6 You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 7 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of birth pains.

    2 Timothy 3:1-5
1 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.

  28. 1. Christians are NOT concerned about the Mayan calendar or the year 2012.

    2. There’s a difference between astrology and astronomy.
-Astrology: The study of the positions and aspects of celestial bodies in the belief that they have an influence on the course of natural earthly occurrences and human affairs.
-Astronomy: The scientific study of matter in outer space, especially the positions, dimensions, distribution, motion, composition, energy, and evolution of celestial bodies and phenomena.

    3. The nominal “Christians” that destroyed the Mayans defied almost every teaching that Jesus had given while He was in human form.

    4. The actual Church is merely the body of believers and not some bureaucratic organization that keeps secrets from the masses. True Christians share their faith by serving others, not by blatantly pointing out their sins. Jesus came to earth not to rule, but to serve those around him who were suffering.

  29. I am a Christian and i not concerned about 2012. I had nothing to do with who murdered Mayans, that is saying it is our fault that we have terrorists come to America & crash airplanes into our buildings in the name of Aliah. My goodness of course the Bible is based upon astrology, God made them, silly.

  30. I do not know of any Christians who are concerned about this.

“But of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come.” (Mark 13:32-33)

Jesus told us in no uncertain terms that we were not to know when the end of the world would come but that we were always to be ready.

Each new Christian denomination seems to worry about the end of the world a bit too much. Then after a couple of centuries, they realize that there are always wars and rumors of wars, etc.

I won’t even mention the hundreds of false predictions of the end of the world over the centuries, all of which were based on individual interpretations of biblical prophecies.

The first century Christian Church thought that Jesus was going to return at any moment. Only after a couple of centuries did the Church realize that it may be 2,000 or 4,000 or 8,000 years before Jesus returns.

The Catholic Church wisely follows Jesus’ advice and teaches that each of us should live as if we will meet our maker in the next ten minutes and that we need to work to make the world a better place for our 100 X great-grandchildren.

Do not worry about the end of the world. Trust God to make sure everything happens to plan. Just be ready to meet God at any time.

    With love in Christ.
